Flaringmist bounded into the clearing, feeling the weak rays of sunlight struggling through the clouds and onto his muscles.
"Heartpaw!" he meowed, stretching. "Heartpaw, are you ready for your first hunting lesson?"

Heartpaw bounded around him, "Yea! Ya! Wo!" she purred.

Flaringmist paused and turned to his apprentice, frowning slightly. "Calm down," he ordered. "It's leaf-bare. We can't afford to have you scare away any prey." He shifted from paw to paw, wondering where to start with his first apprentice.
"Can you remember what I showed you when you were playing with that leaf as a kit?" the golden-brown tom asked.

"Yah!" Heartpaw squealed, she scooped up a leaf and clawed and bit it at the same time.

"Right," Flaringmist meowed. "Essentially, that's what you've got to do to the prey." He flexed a large, golden brown paw. "Keep your claws outstretched as you claw it into the air, and give it a swift death bite at the same time."
The tom leaped onto a leaf, scooping it into the air with outstretched claws before snapping at it. It floated to the ground, two puncture holes in it, but otherwise undamaged.

Heartpaw gazed at the leaf, "Teach me to do that!" she squealed, excited to learn the way to hunt.

"Okay." The mentor stepped bside Heartpaw, tail flicking. "Hold out your claws as far as you can," he ordered. "Stretch them until they can't go any further. Then rake up a leaf with a quick clawing action, at the side so you don't damage it. Then nip it and let it fall. Okay?"

Heartpaw did the actions and purred at the results, "Wow! You are so awesome!" she mewed, staring up at him with admiring eyes. "Lets try it on prey!"

Flaringmist shifted from paw to paw awkwardly. "Not yet," he meowed. "You gotta learn how to stalk first." He dropped down suddenly. "Never let the prey hear you're coming," he growled, narrowing his eyes. "Distribute your weight evenly. Since there isn't much undergrowth here, leap as soon as you think is safe." He stalked along for a moment, before spinning around and facing Heartpaw. "Got it? Show me."

Heartpaw crouched down low like when her mom caught prey for them before they joined ShadowClan. Her ears pinned back too her head and her claws dug into the ground. She took one step for forward, before she realized her tail was making a racket with the leaves. "Opps!" she mewed.

Flaringmist laid a paw gently on her tail. "Keep it still," he rumbled. "We don't want to scare away the prey. You were good otherwise." He flicked his own tail towards a pile of leaves, where there was a temptingly crunchy looking leaf on top. "Try get that. And remember, be quiet and leap when you can. This prey may not run away from you, but you want to land on top of it in case it does."

Heartpaw stalked skillfully, pouncing on it and biting it, though leave chips flew every where she had managed a silent stalk. "Your a great mentor!" she squealed.

Flaringmist gave a little mrrow and licked down his chest fur self-consciously. "Thanks," he mumbled. "You're a great apprentice." He flicked his tail at another leaf pile. "Keep practicing," he ordered. "I'll watch and tell you where to improve."

"Ok!" she crouched again, her belly fur just skimming the ground. Her eyes narrowed at the largest remain of the leaf, her tail was just hovering over the leafy ground when she pounced, giving the leaf one bite and holding up her catch proudly.

"Very good!" Flaringmist purred, nuzzling Heartpaw briefly. "Keep practising your pounce though. You don't want to have to stalk too long, or the prey will see you."
