It was a chilly afternoon. No wind, thankfully, and the sun was shining brightly, giving a bit of warmth to those who dared to stray from their dens.
Mintflower was one of these cats. The pretty she-cat was laying down beside the meandering river, stretching her sore muscles and enjoying the sun rays.
A bird was perched in a tree not far away, letting a song ring loud and clear. It was a beautiful song, really. she hadn't heard birdsong in a long time. She was suprised that there was a bird who had lingered here and not flown away with the rest of them.
"Hello, there," she said gently. She knew it couldn't understand her. Well, maybe it could, but that was very unlikely. Still, it was nice to talk to some one without her usual shyness peeking in. "Where are the rest of your family?"
The bird stopped sing for a heartbeat and stared at her. Mintflower was ready for it to fly away, frightened by her. But instead, it fluttered down from the branch it was perched apon and began to slowly hop towards her. She smiled and stretched out a paw, smiling warmly.
To her dismay, the small creature was frightened by her gesture and flew away, not looking back. The snowshoe cat sighed, rose to her paws, and sat beside the waters edge, staring sadly at her reflection.
