New Day

The sun had risen past the point of dawn, and the golden tom was just padding out from the warrior's den. The early rays of light touched his pelt, bringing warmth and making his pelt bright. Sunflash gave a long stretch, amber eyes narrowing in content, before glancing off toward the apprentice den. It was time for training to begin for his new apprentice. The tom made his way over and poked his head inside. With the light of the new day, he was able to make out the black fur with the white stripe down his muzzle.

He called in, keeping his voice just loud enough for his apprentice to hear. "Finchpaw, time to head out."

Finchpaw pushed his way out of the den, eyes blurry with sleep. "Yes, Sunflash," he murmured, stretching his body in an enormous stretch. He felt his dark pelt soaking up the sunlight and he shivered with delight. Then he shook himself and stood at attention. "Okay, Sunflash!" he said brightly, slightly more awake.

Leave It To You

Sunflash purred at the apprentice's enthusiasm. He could easily remember being so excited once, himself, eager to get out of the den and into the forest. "Alright. Now that you're up and moving, we can get going." He gave his shoulder a few quick licks to hide the bedraggled fur that still stuck up so as not to look like a lazypaw himself. "Have any ideas? What do you feel up to today?"

Finchpaw's tail twitched with excitement, and his whole body quivered with glee. "Hunting!" he mewed eagerly. Inside he was pleased that his mentor had looked to him for an opinion. "Let's go hunting today! For the fresh-kill pile!"

Early Riser

Sunflash twitched his whiskers, still smiling. "Good idea. We can get it stocked up in time for breakfast." He glanced over to the fresh-kill pile. Now that new-leaf was here, the prey had woken and were in good supply. But the hunting party hadn't gone out yet, so it was still low from the previous day. He looked back to Finchpaw with a flick of his tail. "So where do you think would be a good hunting place now at this time of day?"

Finchpaw paused for a moment, head tilted on the side and eyes narrowed in thought. "Sunningrocks?" he suggested. "The warmth will hopefully tempt the prey out."

Thinking It Over

Sunflash nodded. "That's right, the prey will come out. But so will the adders that live in the cracks." Even the strongest warrior would be in big trouble if an adder was able to lodge it's fangs into him. Finchpaw was too young to even be training for an adder attack, in his mind. "It's better to hunt at Sunningrocks in the early dawn or late evening. Where would be a better place?"

Finchpaw rested his head on his paws for a moment, eyes closed, before leaping back up. "How about the Great Sycamore?" he suggested. "There's the perfect amount of cover there, and cats haven't hunted there in a while."

Follow Me

Sunflash purred. "Excellent. The squirrel and mice should be just coming out of their dens in search of food, so it'll be easy to sneak up on them at this time of day." He glanced off in the direction of the tall tree. It wasn't too far off from the camp, but was still a good run to get there. The golden tabby looked back to his apprentice. "Well, now that we've covered prey, let's try your knowledge of the territory and scents. I'm going to run ahead, and wait at the base of the Great Sycamore for you to find me. Ready?" Without waiting for a response, the warrior bolted out of camp, leaving Finchpaw behind. His paws new the paths of the forest well, but would his apprentice?

Finchpaw chased after his mentor, tripping over himself in his haste. "Mousebrain!" he scolded himself, before stopping to think about the way.
