Minnow slept soundly for the night, she awoke when the moon was setting by the edge of the trees but night still held it's grip. Crickets buzzed in the bushes though morning birds sang sweet songs of daylight. She purred at the warm breeze that showed a good day.

The black and white tom wasn't far away, he was always not seen, but he was there. Oh, he was there.

He wrinkled his nose, staring at Minnow, smiling down gently. He was going to be a father, and he wasn't sure if he was going to like it, but he didn't care.

His bobtail twitched, watching her with soft eyes.

Minnow purred, then sat down again, her paws under her chest, but she started to shift. She got up and licked her swollen tummy. Then she hissed in pain, she moaned and laid on her side. She knew the kit were coming.

Yakkai got out of his hiding place in alarm, landing right beside her. He licked her ears, and then her cheek, purring comfortingly.

"It's okay, I'm here..."

He murmured soothingly.

Minnow gasped in agony, "I know love." she purred, then her teeth clenched in another spasm. Then she gasped and the first black kit came, a tom. Then the second, a grey she-kit and a black she-kit. "Yakkai! Lick their fur the wrong way, keep them warm." she hissed.

Yakkai looked at the kits, and did the best he could. He licked their fur the wrong way, giving them each a quick turn before going to the next.

He made sure he was keeping them warm, not stopping to pause for breath.

The sun started to rise in the sky, dawn light filtering into the den as the last kit came. She was a light grey kit, as Minnow started to lick their fur the wrong way dawn light dappled her pelt, warming the kit even further. Minnow gave a deep breath in relief as the pain ebbed away.
