Feeling the she-cat's tail lay across her shoulders, Brightkit gave a little purr. "Yes! The wind, the grass, it all smells great!" The she-kit took a few pawsteps forward again, leaving the guiding tail behind, and parted her jaws again to scent out the world around her. It was then that she realized just how many cats there were. There are so many! she gasped to herself. Some further ahead, some way off to the sides. Countless number of cats! I wonder if I'll ever get to meet them all.
Putting aside the matter, Brightkit tried to relocate her siblings. It was surprisingly difficult, because all the scents she had taken in seemed to envelop her, overwhelming her senses. Confusion took over. The silver kit faced anxiously her left, then right, wondering if she'd be able to find them again. But as she moved her head about, the wind brushed her whiskers, carrying with it the three most familiar scents. She sighed in relief. There they were, just a little ways ahead of her. Smiling to cover up a bit of embarrassment, Brightkit bounded over to them. "Hi, guys!" she mewed. "I'm here!"
Greypool smiled slightly when Brightkit found her way to the others. He trotted over to Smallheart and gave her a gentle lick on the cheek. "Hello my love.", he whispered. He had not thought himself to be the best choice for an adoptive father , there were so many other couples in Windclan yet he had been chosen to be their adoptive father.
Darkkit looked at his brother apologetically at his mew. He then turned his gaze back towards the other kits that were now getting up with Smallheart. At his mothers' mew he padded towards her and snuggled.
He saw that the kits had now rushed out the den, so he decided to stay with his mother. He was surprised to realize that one of the kits hadn't opened her eyes yet from Smallheart's litter. Before he could go help her, she had already found her way out. It was a sigh of relief, but then he heard his mother talking to his sister.
Darkkit padded towards Quietkit and sat beside her with a kind smile. At his mothers' prompting, he watched his sister and his ears fell. Nothing was coming and he knew it was going to upset his sister and mother. He made sure Cedarclaw caught his eye. He didn't want her to be so flustered that she ended up hurting his sisters' feelings. Quickly, he turned his gaze back towards Quietkit and assured her with his tail touching her haunches.
QuietKit flustered. She already knew what would happen. She didn't want to open her mouth and try. She already knew. So, with this, she shook her little ginger head once. She already knew that her mother would still tell her to, so she just opened her jaws a little.
She closed her jaws once more, and looked over at DarkKit. She hoped that he knew that she knew what was going on, but all he did was lay his tail over her shoulders. She looked down, and looked back over at her ma.
She hoped that she would love her all the same. Sure, Quietkit wasn't perfect, but... she was still the same, right?
Cedarclaw caught the look in her son's eye, and felt as if the nest and earth had slipped out from under her. How could she have been so ignorant? How could she not have noticed that one of her kits couldn't speak? The tortoiseshell began to shake a little as she looked down at her little she-kit, watching her open her jaws only to have no sound come out. How could I have been so stupid?
"Oh, my little Quietkit," the queen moaned, bending her neck to nuzzle the ginger she-kit with pain in her voice. It felt as if her throat was closing up, cutting her off from air. What had she done wrong, so that one of her kits would be born mute? It must have been her fault, after all, because Quietkit had never done a thing wrong in her life. "I'm so sorry." Cedarclaw clamped her eyes shut as if doing so would block everything out, before opening them and giving her daughter three licks on her cheek. "I'm so sorry, my kit," she whispered with a strained voice.
~~~~~
Stonekit watched her mother and blinked sorrowfully. He'd never really thought about the matter of Quietkit's lack of voice. It had never bothered him- that was just Quietkit. But now it made sense. The tortoiseshell kit padded a little closer to Cedarclaw and his sister, glancing to Darkkit with unwanted knowing, and touched his black nose to the ginger she-kit's. He felt so awkward. What was he supposed to do? He felt bad for his sister, he truly did, but Stonekit was having trouble in finding a way to express it.
Quietkit blinked. She didn't care that she was mute. Now-- with both her other brother and mother knowing, she was getting smothered. She didn't like that. Okay, she did, but not in the sense of how they were doing it themselves, like the reason.
All she could do to tell them to stop was jumping back. She shook her head side to side furiously, and looked at Darkkit. She blinked, and hoped that he knew to tell them, somehow, that she didn't care she was mute.
She looked down, and looked at her mother. Couldn't she see? Couldn't she tell that she didn't care that she was mute? It shouldn't matter!
Mom, stop! I don't care, it isn't your fault, and you shouldn't be sorry! she screamed in her mind, mentally kicking herself in the flank.
Bittykit looked over at the little group, and was a bit confused. The feminine tom padded up towards them cautiously, and sniffed.
Cedarclaw's ears pricked in surprise when Quietkit pulled away and jumped back. Her orange eyes blinked, a little confused at first. Then as she watched the ginger kit's movements- the swift shaking of her head, the pleading looks- it began to form the thoughts in her head. Did she really not care? The tortoiseshell supposed that if she had never had a voice in the first place, she wouldn't miss in now, but the fact that one of her once thought to be perfect kits was mute hurt the queen's heart.
"Dear," she murmured, readjusting herself so that she was better facing her daughter. "I just wanted you to have everything you need... I didn't want anything like this to happen. But I still love you, Quietkit, and if this doesn't put you down, then you're going to be just as strong a she-cat as me." Cedarclaw smiled a little, and leaned out to nuzzle the ginger kit's cheek again.
Hearing another kit's mew off to the side, Cedarclaw looked back and found Bittykit standing nearby. She winced a little at his question. The queen didn't want to show it if Quietkit wanted everyone to accept her condition and move on, but the fact that something was wrong with her only she-kit was still a thorn in her chest. "Nothing," she mewed calmly. "We were just... Clearing some things up."
Darkkit looked at how his brother and mother were reacting to this and he grew frustrated with all the pity. He wasn't angry at his brother so much as Cedarclaw. His own mother hadn't figured out his sister was mute and that this was already accepted by her.
At Quietkit's look towards him, he spoke up as soon as Cedarclaw had shut her mouth. "Stop pitying her. She's perfect how she is and already accepts it." He was up on his paws giving Cedarclaw and his brother a hard gaze. Couldn't they just love her for who she was?
The jabbing comment made by Darkkit almost made the tortoiseshell flinch. He had a point, and she agreed with every word. But Cedarclaw was not fond of being talked down to in such a way- especially by her own kit. "Darkkit," she mewed with only a tinge of hardness, "I know that. I don't love your sister any differently from how I did yesterday, or the day before that, or even the day you all were born. You're all my kits, and Sootclaw's, so I know you're all strong little things. I don't pity Quietkit." That much was true. It wasn't that she pitied her daughter, really, but as a mother it felt more like a failure on her part. Cedarclaw had tried to be so careful with her belly while she had carried the litter, making sure not to bump into anything or overexert herself. But maybe there had been something, some little thing like sleeping in the wrong position. It was something she couldn't just push away. But they're all strong. She may not have a voice I can hear, but she has one where it counts.
Darkkit's gaze softened when Cedarclaw explained. He smiled and then looked towards his sister. "Quietkit, do you want to go see if the elders will tell us a story? Maybe this time it can be about a fierce battle instead of star-crossed lovers dying because Starclan doesn't approve. Like anyone would be so daft to do so," he asked his sister with bright hopeful eyes.
He loved those stories and the ones warriors sometimes gave just for fun. Quietkit was such a loving and fun sister to be around, that he thought she would need a bit of a pick-up in cheer right now even if she didn't show that she needed it.
((XD Darkkit is totally onto the medicene cat and her lover. He must be physic, the cheeky tom lol))
Cedarclaw purred, somewhat in relief, and used the tip of her tail to bat lightly across Darkkit's ear. "That's right. No cat today in their right mind would let themselves fall in love with a cat if StarClan forbade it. Nothing like that has happened since I was born." The whole idea seemed ridiculous to her. If cats from a different Clan feel in love, they would have to be absolute mouse-brains. It obviously would lead to nothing but trouble. And of course medicine cats were off limits, as well, but Cedarclaw couldn't quite see a reason why they'd form any romantic relationships. It was against StarClan, for one thing, but they also were only supposed to worry about the health of their Clan. Not kits or mates.
~~~~~
Stonekit gave an enthusiastic mrrow of agreement. "Yeah! A story about how WindClan defeats the vicious ShadowClan!" The tortoiseshell tom then twitched his whiskers mischievously, crouched, and then sprang at Darkkit to knock him over. "Those are the best stories!"
Smallheart's ears grew hot, but she greeted Greypool happily, bounding over to see him. "Hello, love." she purred, sitting beside him. "How are you?" she asked quietly so only he could hear.
Darkkit loooked at Cedarclaw with wide eyes. Suddenly his brother sprang at him and he fell down. Quickly, he pushed his legs up to get rid of his sibling's weight. Darkkit began to laugh. "Defiantly! Windclan is the best because we don't hide like little mice in the darkness," he spoke while getting low to the ground and springing onto Stonekit.
He allowed his body to ball up and roll off of Stonekit's back. The black kit pawed at his brothers' haunches and waved his tail for Quietkit to join in.
Stonekit squealed when he was suddenly pushed off, but he rolled back onto his paws unharmed. His eyes gleamed with the excitement of play as he crouched down low to the ground and lashed his tail. "Yep! WindClan fight like real cats- bravely and fairly!" The tortoiseshell tom then saw his darkly-colored brother spring into the air, so he braced himself for the oncoming impact, and just managed to keep on his paws as Darkkit rolled off of him and pawed at his hind legs. "Hey! he mewed with a laugh as he swung around, rose up on his rear paws, and battered his brother's ears his his forepaws.
QuietKit looked over at her siblings, and couldn't help but smile. She looked at her mother, and then turned her gaze at the entrance. A black tom was padding through-- SootClaw. She couldn't help but get up on all fours, and dash towards him, starting to rub up on his right front-leg.
-
SootClaw indeed did pad in, he wanted to be with CedarClaw and the kits for a while. It seemed nice. He was glad that a little daughter of his started to rub on his leg, that only made him purr.
"Heya, girl," he mewed softly, soon turning his green gaze towards CedarClaw.
