Now the dead tom was completely thrown. How long had this been going on? More importantly, how had it all begun? He could have sworn he'd never given her a tip, never thought of her in such a way. 'So this is why she seemed so soft and weak', he realized. 'Things weren't supposed to go this way.'
Froststorm stared down at the she-cat. What was he supposed to say? He didn't feel that way about Needleheart. At least, he was pretty sure. Nothing mattered except Riddlestar's blood. But he needed the creamy she-cat, still. What could he say to make things as they were before?
He sighed. "Look, Needleheart. I'm dead- you know that. But you are important to me. I couldn't have gotten this far without you're support." Where these the right words? They felt so jumbled and confused. Froststorm didn't know what else to say, so he closed his jaws, waiting for a reaction.
The she-cat's ears pricked, and then drooped. She could tell he didn't feel the same, which just made her angry, and upset. She gritted her teeth, keeping her mouth closed.
She then got up, and gave her pelt a shake.
"Fine."
That was the only word she said, only thing that she could say. Then a question slipped out.
"It doesn't matter how I feel, does it? Because you don't feel the same, right?"
Pain was squeaking in that, but she didn't care. She didn't care anymore.
Obviously, those had been the wrong choice of words. 'Come on, Froststorm, think! You still need her.' The warrior's claws wished terribly to rake the earth beneath his paws. He never should have come. He never should have said anything. It only dug a deep hole for him to re-bury himself in.
He began pulling words out of his mind, not sure what half of it all meant. "Needleheart, I never said that. I just stated that a relationship between us would be... Complicated." He twitched his whiskers. "I never thought about this before. It's all a shock, really, but, I do care. I want what's best for you, and well, I think we both know that that's not me." For an added touch, Froststorm tried to brush his tail along her flank, knowing it just would go right through. "Why do you think I chose to let you stay with me? I could have killed you, but I didn't. I think I understand that now."
Froststorm grimaced. She was being so difficult! He thought quickly, then spoke very calmly, a tinge of sincerity on his tongue. "Maybe in the beginning, Needleheart. But I grew fond of you. You were different from the others. You were bold and daring, always ready for a bloodshed. And when I died, I saw how loyal you were to my memory. I was so proud." He tried to smile, whether Needleheart could see it or not.
"That's exactly it. You're not like them. No other she-cat wold ever have understood my dreams. That's why, Needleheart. That's why."
NeedleHeart cringed. She slowly nodded, and looked down. She still was confused.
"Then... what am I supposed to do with Ice..? I mean, I know what, but I don't know. If that makes sense."
She frowned, and sighed. She really was confused, and FrostStorm was always on her mind. She couldn't get him out. She wanted him out, but she knew it was not possible.
Froststorm held back a sigh of relief. He was sure he'd evaded that obstacle, at least for now. He could handle anything comparatively. Trying to be understanding and gentle, the tom attempted to touch his nose to hers. Froststorm could guess at how he was supposed to act, in any case. And it wasn't too hard, he realized. All he had to do was put the matters of Ice and Riddlestar a bit lower in priority. At the moment, what mattered most had to be Needleheart.
"I don't think it does, in my mind," he mewed softly. "Try to explain it to me."
Needleheart felt him try to put his nose against hers, for she felt it go right through her. She shuddered, but then relaxed with a soft smile towards him, at least, she thought.
"Well, I know that I have to keep him on the path of killing RiddleStar, and the others... but I don't exactly know how I can do so. Firestar, StormStrike, and MiracleFur has put me in a prickle..."
Froststorm merely chuckled, and if those cats were nothing but a joke. "Don't worry about those weaklings. You just need to be wary of them. Whenever they're around, just act like the goodie-goodie cat they want out of you. But when their backs are turned, you're free." Those cats were just small bumps along the road. If Needleheart was smart, they shouldn't pose as a threat. "And as for Ice, just keep reminding him of where his own loyalties lie. Remind him of who he is and why he's there. And I don't believe the Clan cats teach death blows..." He trailed off, meaning for her to fill in the blank.
She nodded eagerly, a raggy purr forming out of her throat, mostly towards him. NeedleHeart felt as if the world revolved around FrostStorm, more like, it was him. She wanted to be with him, she wanted him to be alive, not some ghostly object nor substance.
Froststorm purred his approval, the doing so feeling corse and unfamiliar on his throat. "Right." He couldn't give up, not now. What had he been thinking? Of course Ice would succeed. There was no other option- not one he would allow to happen. But at Needleheart's question, he hesitated. In truth, he didn't know. "I don't know when you'll be able to 'see' me again, Needleheart. Making myself merely appear in this form took a lot of work to get down. It's much easier with Ice nearby, but either way I can't control where I appear or how much." The though occurred to the dead tom that she might never see him. Not while she was alive, at least.
Froststorm flicked an ear. "I think so. We can't give Firestar andy reason not to trust you." The invisible tabby winced. He could feel his mind beginning to weaken. Soon there would be nothing left of him, and he'd be cast into the black abyss once again. The warrior gritted his fangs. "Be brave for me. I'll watch out for you and Ice whenever I can. Just be careful."
